active Boston, 1917-1993
BiographyATLANTIC MONTHLY PRESS is one of two hardcover imprints of Grove Atlantic, Inc. The Atlantic Monthly Press was founded in 1917 in Boston (legend has it at the bar of the Parker House Hotel) as a book publishing imprint borne out of the venerable Atlantic Monthly magazine. Over the next six decades, as an imprint first with Houghton Mifflin (until 1934), then Little, Brown (until 1982), the books published by the Atlantic Monthly Press won numerous Pulitzer Prizes and National Book Awards and included the best-selling titles Mutiny on the Bounty; Goodbye, Mr. Chips; Ship of Fools; Fire in the Lake; The Soul of a New Machine; and Blue Highways. In 1986, the press was separated from the magazine by new owners and established as a fully independent publishing house. Under this new leadership in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the press published such authors as Raymond Carver, Ron Chernow (National Book Award 1990), J. P. Donleavy, Richard Ford, Francisco Goldman, Jay McInerney, P.J. O’Rourke (two New York Times #1 best sellers, Parliament of Whores and Give War a Chance), Rian Malan, Jeannette Winterson, and Tobias Wolff. In 1993, the Atlantic Monthly Press was merged with Grove Weidenfeld to form Grove Atlantic, Inc.
Since 1993 Atlantic Monthly Press has been a hardcover imprint of Grove Atlantic, publishing fiction, history, biography, and narrative nonfiction. Authors and titles include Sherman Alexie’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Mark Bowden’s Black Hawk Down, Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City, George Crile’s Charlie Wilson’s War, Leif Enger’s Peace Like a River, Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, Stephanie Kallos’s Broken for You, Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti mystery novels, and numerous titles by Jim Harrison and Fay Weldon.
